In 1925 the University of Thessaloniki was founded, including the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The faculty is divided into Schools, with respect to subjects and accepted its first students in 1928. In 1939 the Divisions of the University were determined and in 1954 the University of Thessaloniki was renamed Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The School of Physics was founded in 1982 and the following year the Faculty of Sciences was established, which included the School along with those of Chemistry, Biology, Geology and Informatics. In 1983 the 5 Sectons were established:
- Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics,
- Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics,
- Condensed Matter and Materials Physics (renaming in 2022 of Solid State Physics Division),
- Electronics and Computers,
- Applied and Environmental Physics
and in 1987 their subjects are defined.

In this context, a series of festivities begins in 2024-25 for the 100th aniversary of the School of Physics establishment in 1928.

The School of Physics welcomes visitors by participating in the AUTh Open Days, an event that takes place on 2 Sundays in May and is open to the public.
Phenomenon: The School of Physics has been publishing the journal “Phenomenon” since 1992. In the journal Phenomenon you can find articles on scientific issues of Physics, topics of general interest but also useful information and announcements about what is happening in the School of Physics. Link
The School of Physics accepts visits from groups of students to its educational and/or research laboratories. The visit to each lab lasts 45 minutes and takes place in groups of up to 15 students. In case there are more than 15 students, two classes are created and two labs are visited by rotation.
The visit can be conducted:
- within the main campus, in the building of the Faculty of Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (map),
- at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation, CIRI (Thermi, next to NOESIS, map).

Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics
The School of Physics organizes three thematic series of seminars concerning the latest scientific developments, the professional prospects the School of Physics offers to its students, as well as popular lectures for the general public. The seminars are announced and attendance can be in person or via videoconference. The seminars are videotaped for the School’s digital archive and posted on the School’s YouTube channel.
School Seminar: The School of Physics organizes a series of seminars on scientific topics related to a variety of different subjects in Physics. The seminars are given by members of the School and by distinguished scientists from Greece and abroad and take place in the A31 auditorium on Wednesdays at 12:00. Schedule.

Physics Around Us: Conducting popular lectures on everyday life and technology topics related to various fields of Physics. The lectures are aimed at the general public. Schedule.

Informational Seminars: The School of Physics holds informative lectures for students of the School regarding the research conducted in the School and the professional prospects offered to graduates. Schedule.

The School of Physics was founded in 1928 and as part of its 100 years’ anniversary it updates its alumni registar. If you have graduated from the School of Physics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, please take 5 minutes to fill in the following form.
